SomnoMed Symposium Speakers
Dr. John E. Remmers
Dr. John E. Remmers is a Pulmonologist and professor of Internal Medicine and Physiology & Biophysics at the University of Calgary supported by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. He is a well-known expert on snoring and sleep apnea. He established the Sleep Centre at Foothills Hospital and has been clinically active in the field for 30 years. He and his colleagues have developed a simple home monitor which effectively diagnoses sleep apnea and several treatments for treatment of sleep apnea. His research interests relate to neurobiology of respiratory rhythmogenesis, chemoreception, and pathophysiology of control of breathing.
Dr. Remmers performs a wide variety of research, ranging from study of sleep-disordered breathing in animals to treatment of sleep apnea. Dr. Remmers served two terms as the Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Applied Physiology. He was selected to present honorary research lectures by the American Thoracic Society and the American Physiological Society.
Dr. Susanne Schwarting
Dr. Susanne Schwarting is a general dentist in Kiel, Germany, who placed her first mandibular advancement device in 1996. She developed a passion for treatment of sleep apnea with oral appliances and for years her practice has been dedicated to dental sleep medicine. She cooperates with a range of related disciplines: sleep physicians, pulmonologists as well as ENT-specialists in Northern Germany. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, founding member and president of the German Society of Dental Sleep Medicine (www.dgzs.de), founding member and on the board of the European Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (www.eadsm.org).
She lectures to sleep physicians and dentists on the dental treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders and presents dental sleep medicine to the general public and the media by articles and TV spots. She initiated workgroups of dental sleep medicine in the United Kingdom (2003), Austria (2004), Italy (2004), Switzerland (2005) and Singapore (2007). Dr. Schwarting is on the editorial board of Sleep and Breathing and the German Somnojournal and has published a position paper on the use of mandibular advancement devices in adults with sleep-related breathing disorders.
Dr. Kent Smith
Dr. Kent Smith is the co-founder of and the co-director for the Dental Organization for Sleep Apnea (DOSA) and is on the advisory Board for Sleep Healers, a medical group operating sleep centers and conducting workshops on sleep disorders. In 2006, he was approached by LVI Global to create a Sleep Disorder course, and is the lead instructor of their threeday program. He regularly lectures on sleep breathing disorders both nationally and internationally for study groups, major meetings and A.W.A.K.E. groups.
Dr. Smith is the managing partner of 21st Century Dental which utilizes more than 20 well-trained team members.
His efforts have led to profiles in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Early Show with Bryant Gumbel, local
television and many dental and non-dental publications. He is also the creator of FindCE.com and Find-Speaker.com, and has been named a Top 10 VIP by the Speaking Consulting Network for 2009.
Dr. Daniel Taché
Dr. Daniel Taché has been practicing Dentistry since 1975. He attended St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, NH as a Biology Major and received his B.A. degree in 1970, graduating cum laude. Dr. Taché went on to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, where he was awarded his DMD in 1974. Dr. Taché went into private practice in Houston and focused primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders.
Dr. Taché was a frequent lecturer and assistant clinical professor at the University of Texas, Health Science Center-Dental Branch. In 1999, he developed an Orofacial Pain department for a multi-center dental corporation, working both in Appleton and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Dr. Taché returned to private practice as a partner in University Dental, LLC in 2004. Since that time, he and his partner have developed Orofacial Pain Associates of North East Wisconsin (NEW) offering help to patients with Orofacial Pain and Sleep/Breathing problems. Dr. Taché remains very active in education and continues to lecture throughout North America on the subject of Sleep/Breathing disorders.
Dr. Laurence Barsh
Dr. Laurence Barsh is a retired general practitioner of dentistry. For the past 10 years he has been developing web sites commercially for the dental profession. He is Founder and President of Quietsleep® (Quietsleep.com) and Snoring Isn’t Sexy (snoringisntsexy.com) and has written three books on marketing dentistry: Web Sites That Work, Make It Easy for Me and Wake Up Your Practice with Sleepy Patients.
Dr. Larry Barsh received his education from Boston University and the Harvard School of Dentistry. He is widely published on the dental role in Sleep Disordered Breathing and marketing in dentistry. Dr. Barsh has lectured nationally and internationally on dental sleep medicine, dental treatment planning, restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, dental implantology and dental photography.
Dr. Leopoldo Correa
Dr. Leopoldo Correa is currently Assistant Professor and Head of the Dental Sleep Medicine Section at The Craniofacial Pain Center, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He received his dental degree from the University of Veracruz, Mexico. He completed his clinical training on Temporomandibular Disorders at the Craniofacial Pain Center, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA under the supervision of his mentor Dr. Noshir R. Mehta.
Dr. Correa is an active member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) where he participates in the “Dental School Curriculum Committee”. He is also a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) where he is a member of the “Sleep Related Breathing Disorders Committee”, and a board member of the Massachusetts Sleep Society. Dr. Correa has delivered lectures nationwide and teaches Dental Sleep Medicine to the predoctoral and postgraduate programs at Tufts University. Dr. Correa also currently instructs the residents of The Center for Sleep Medicine at Tufts Medical Center.
Dr. Barry Glassman
Barry Glassman, DMD, maintains a private practice in Allentown, PA, which is limited to dental sleep medicine, chronic pain management, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, a Fellow of the International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics, a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management. Dr. Glassman is on staff at the Lehigh Valley Hospital where he serves as a resident instructor of Craniofacial Pain and Dysfunction and Dental Sleep Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and is on staff at the Sacred Heart Hospital Sleep Disorder Center as well as serving as the Chief Dental Consultant to three other sleep centers in the Lehigh Valley. He is a popular and dynamic international speaker and serves as a guest lecturer throughout the year. He hosts in-house courses on both Pain Management and Sleep Disorders and is a frequent speaker on major chronic pain and joint dysfunction. He has had several articles on pain management and sleep disorders published in both peer and non peer reviewed journals.
